Nursing gets treated like the backup plan and this episode made it obvious how wrong that is. Dr. Raoji described shifts where she's the one catching problems before a doctor ever walks in the room, and she said it without any bitterness about who gets the credit. What got us was how much of the job is emotional labor that never shows up in a job description. She talked about sitting with families on the worst day of their lives and then going to the next room and being fully present again. We don't know if we could do that. We've got a lot more respect for the people who can.
